What is Shingles?

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you recover from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in your nerve tissue. Years or decades later, it can reactivate as shingles — typically as a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body.

In Canada, approximately 1 in 3 people will develop shingles in their lifetime. The risk increases significantly after age 50. One of the most feared complications is post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN)— a severe, sometimes disabling nerve pain that can persist for months or years after the rash heals.

The good news is that shingles is largely preventable with vaccination.

Who Should Get the Shingrix Vaccine?

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) and Health Canada recommend Shingrix for:

  • All adults aged 50 and older — regardless of whether they remember having chickenpox
  • Adults aged 18 and older who are immunocompromised due to disease or therapy
  • Adults who previously received the older Zostavax vaccine
  • Adults with chronic conditions that increase their risk of shingles complications

Even if you have had shingles before, Shingrix is recommended to reduce your risk of a recurrence.

The 2-Dose Shingrix Schedule

Dose 1
Day 0

Your first Shingrix injection, administered at the pharmacy.

Dose 2
2–6 months later

The second and final dose, completing the vaccination series.

Both doses are required for full protection. The 2-dose Shingrix series provides over 90% protection against shingles, and this protection remains strong for at least 7 years after vaccination.

Pain, redness, or swelling at injection siteVery common
Muscle aches and fatigueVery common
HeadacheCommon
Shivering and feverCommon
Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, stomach pain)Common

Serious allergic reactions to Shingrix are rare. If you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of your face or throat, or a rapid heartbeat after your vaccination, seek immediate medical attention.

Why Shingrix vs. Zostavax?

Zostavax was the original shingles vaccine, available in Canada since 2008. Shingrix has largely replaced Zostavax because of its superior effectiveness:

Recommended
Shingrix (recombinant)
Efficacy: 90%+
Duration: 7+ years
Zostavax (live attenuated)
Efficacy: ~51%
Duration: Declines over time

If you received Zostavax in the past, it is recommended that you still receive Shingrix. The two vaccines are different formulations, and Shingrix offers significantly better protection.
