What Is a MedsCheck and Why It Matters

MedsCheck is a free government-funded program in Ontario that allows you to sit down with your pharmacist for a thorough, personalized review of all your medications. If you take three or more prescription medications, you may be eligible for this valuable service.

Our pharmacists at Longfields Pharmacy in Nepean take the time to understand your complete medication regimen — including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and natural health products. We identify potential drug interactions, duplicate therapies, and opportunities to simplify your treatment.

Many Ottawa patients have been surprised to discover that their medications were interacting, causing side effects, or that simpler alternatives existed. A MedsCheck at Longfields Pharmacy is a proactive step toward safer, more effective health management.

What is MedsCheck and am I eligible?

MedsCheck is a free medication review program funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health. You're eligible if you have an Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) card and you take 3 or more prescription medications for chronic conditions. Annual reviews are available, as well as follow-up reviews.

How long does a medication review take?

A standard MedsCheck review typically takes 20–30 minutes. We recommend bringing all your medication bottles, including OTC products and supplements, so we can do a complete review. The time is well worth it for the clarity and safety it provides.

Do I need a doctor's referral for a MedsCheck?

No referral is necessary. You can book a MedsCheck directly with us by calling 613-440-9199 or visiting Longfields Pharmacy at 613 Longfields Drive, Unit 106, Nepean. We'll schedule a private consultation at a convenient time.

What should I bring to my medication review?

Please bring all your prescription medication bottles, OTC products, vitamins and supplements, your health card, and if possible, a list of any allergies or past adverse reactions. The more complete the picture, the more thorough and helpful your review will be.

What happens after my medication review?

You'll receive a personalized MedsCheck Medication Record — a comprehensive list of your medications with instructions, tips, and notes from our pharmacist. We'll also communicate relevant findings to your physician (with your consent) to ensure coordinated care.

Can I get a MedsCheck at home if I can't travel to the pharmacy?

Yes! We offer MedsCheck at Home for patients who are homebound or unable to visit the pharmacy. Our pharmacist can conduct the review at your residence. Combined with our free prescription delivery service, we make it easy for Ottawa residents to access complete pharmaceutical care from home.
